by following these step by step instructions for nail competition day. If you can follow these guidelines, you will always be a winner. No matter what the outcome is.
Night Before The Competition
Give your model a spa manicure.
Check and organize nail supplies.
Set out what you are going to wear.
Read the rules & regulations again.
Go over any past score sheets you may have and focus on goals.
Go to bed early and get a good nights rest.
Visualize how the competition day will go.
Don't go out drinking! I have seen top competitors lose because of this.
Morning Of The Competition
Get up early.
Dress professionally.
Eat a good breakfast.
Arrive to competition area early to get a good seat.
Check in at the registration desk to receive your number.
Set up your table.
Prep your models nails.
Table Set Up
Pick a seat away from vents.
Drafts can potentially cause air bubbles in your acrylic product.
Set up your table as you would in the salon.
Do not take up too much room. Respect your neighbor's space.
Use dark colored towels to see your models nails better.
Use a heating pad. Competition area is usually cold. This keeps your models hands warm and also helps to prevent product crystallization.
Be organized.
Sanitation Procedures
Demonstrating good sanitation procedures is a sign of a true professional.
All metal implements should be completely submerged in disinfect solution.
Bring hand sanitizer.
Label all containers.
Prep Your Hand Model
Push the cuticles back.
Remove a shape the free edge.
Buff the nail plate to remove the shine.
Brush off dust.
Nail Competition Briefing
A mandatory briefing session for all participates will occur prior to the start of competition.
At this point, prep work on your model must stop.
Competition director will outline all rules and regulations.
Competition director will address any questions and concerns that the participates might have.
During The Competition
Take a deep breath.
Focus and tune out all that is around you.
Pretend you are in the salon.
Visualize the finished nails.
Keep a photo of a competition set of nails next to you.
Start on the polished hand first. This will help to get the jitters out by the time you get to the pink and white hand.
Commit to your time schedule.
Perform each step on all ten nails before going to the next step.
Focus on the step you are currently working on. Nothing else exists.
Don't think of your next step until you get to that step.
Perfect each step.
Always remember to double check your work for consistency.
Check your work 5 ways - your view, right side, left side, down the barrel, and model's perspective.
Don't spend a lot of time perfecting smile lines on the polished hand.
If unexpected challenges arise, deal with it and move forward. Remain focused.
If you finish early, use the time to refine the unpolished hand.
After The Competition
Make sure your model has your number.
Show your model to the judging area.
Keep model's purse with you.
Clean your area.
Stay away from judging area.
Network with other competitors.
Share you knowledge with others.
Award Ceremony
Attend the award ceremony.
Regardless of the outcome, always behave in a professional manner.
Learn to accept winning or losing with dignity.
See the winning sets of nails.
Congratulate the winners.
If you win, take your model on stage with you.
If you win, be present in the moment and enjoy what you've achieved.
Evaluating Your Performance
Receive your score sheet.
Examine it carefully, save it, and learn from it.
Use your score sheet to set goals for your next competition.
Take your score sheet and your model and have all 3 judges critique your nails.
Don't be too critical of yourself.
Be proud of yourself for taking on the challenge and improving your skill.
